Marathon Monday

It’s Marathon Monday time! I’ve been wanting to start this Monday themed blog post for awhile and with the new year kicked off, now’s the perfect time! Every Monday, the Marathon Monday blog post will highlight a marathon, facts about marathons or a marathoner, products for the marathoners at heart, etc. These posts will be for the love of 26.2.

Since many of us are getting ready to run the full monty next week during the runDisney Walt Disney World Marathon weekend, I can’t help but think about the one thing that I will be looking forward to: the moment I cross that finish line. And then it got me thinking about some of the most amazing marathons and their finish lines. Check them out:

Training for a full marathon is hard work. It takes months and months of time and dedication. But crossing the finish line is an amazing feeling. It’s something that can’t be described in words or in a blog post. It’s something you have to experience. It’s a life changing experience. Crossing the finish line is actually where your life begins! It’s where you become a marathoner!

The #WDWMarathon That Wasn’t!

It’s Marathon Monday! What a better post than my own for #WDWMarathon! It’s been over a week now since the runDisney Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend and I still can’t wrap my brain around what happen. I’ve started writing this blog post a million times and then for some reason I can’t finish it. It’s kind of like the #WDWMarathon.

The morning of the marathon was race two for me since I was doing the Goofy Challenge. I woke up feeling great, so great that I didn’t even feel like I completed 13.1 miles the day before. I still have to write my #WDWHalf recap and I will, but this one had to be first.

I met up with Megan and Keri since we were all in the same corral and we decided to run together. I was excited about the thought of running with them! It wasn’t long before we were at the starting line. The start line that I had been waiting for. It was a glorious sight!

Early into the race, we made a stop at the port-a-potties. You’ve got to stop when nature calls, right? Before we knew it, we were off and running again. Right at about mile one, my knee just exploded in pain. It was as if a bullet shot out of nowhere and went into my knee. I didn’t have a clue what happen. Was it my IT band? But how could it be? Was it from my knee hurting a few weeks back? I was doing my best to keep up with the girls but I was in pain. As we approached the Contemporary on our way to Magic Kingdom, there’s kind of like a tunnel. Going down this absolutely killed me. I couldn’t even run. It felt like my leg was going to crack in half. That’s when I knew I was in trouble. Going up and down or around any sort of incline made the pain unbearable. All I wanted to do was make it to Magic Kingdom. And we did. I can tell from the picture that my smile was about all I could muster at this point.

I decided to part ways with Megan and Keri after the castle. Didn’t want to hold them back and I didn’t know how much longer I could go. At mile 7 I stopped at the medical tent and got some tylenol and biofreeze. I’ve never stopped a medical tent before in a runDisney race. This was a first for me. I was hoping this would do the trick to get me back in the game. I started texting my mom that I was in pain and didn’t think I would finish. She was more worried about me doing damage to my body and wanted me to stop right then and there. But I didn’t. At mile 8, a friend of mine found me and I was all tears. Seeing a familiar face when I was in so much pain was a relief. He stayed with me until around mile 11 and then I told him to go because again I didn’t know much longer I could go. I stopped at another medical tent, it was now my third stop..crazy, right? I started to text my husband and he was encouraging me to do whatever I wanted to do, but to also listen to my body. I decided to try and make it to Animal Kingdom. Once I got there, I hobbled my way into the bathroom. It was at that point I realized what bad shape I was  in when I couldn’t walk out of the bathroom stall. I was only halfway through and had 13 more miles to go. Dragging my leg the first 13 miles probably wasn’t the smartest decision and going 13 more miles was going to be plain stupid. I didn’t want to cause more damaged then I already caused. I knew my family was behind my decision. So, I took off my bib and folded it up. My race was over.

My family came to pick me up at Animal Kingdom. I didn’t want to go to the medics, didn’t want to be put on a bus, and definitely didn’t want to be given a medal. I knew in my heart that if I was going to pull myself from the race it was going to be done my way. And it was. I made it 13.72 miles out of 26.2. When I saw this pic from in Animal Kingdom, it said it all. I felt broken and defeated to say the least.

So here I am, an injured runner. I still don’t have an answer as to what’s going on with my knee. It’s been a whirlwind trying to figure it out though. At first my doctor thought it was a blood clot and sent me to the ER. Luckily they didn’t find a clot. I saw the Orthopedic doctor and he thinks it’s either a torn meniscus or stress fracture. I go today for a MRI and I’ll get the results this week. Until then I’m on crutches, dreaming about my running days and wishing that things turned out differently.

Keep Calm and Smart Points On!

Finally the big day is here. I can reveal the top secret project that myself and several bloggers, social media gurus, and Weight Watchers lovers have been a part of. For the past three weeks, we have been testing out their new Smart Points program. Say hello to Smart Points!

As part of this special group, we received early access to the new program. I was not paid in anyway for my effort or time. We got to test out the Beta app and then we had full access to the new app and Smart Points as they work with the new Beyond the Scale program. Here’s what the new program brings you:

So what does this mean? Here’s what it’s meant for me the last three weeks. It’s been a roller coaster of emotions. The first week I was in sheer and utter FREAK OUT mode.

No really, I was. Lean proteins went down in points….win! Some of my favorite go to snacks went up in points (almost double)….say what? All I could think was “How could this be?” “What am I going to do?” I even thought, “There is no way I’m doing Smart Points.” So if YOU are thinking the same thing, take a deep breath. We’ve been exactly where you are right now.

After the first week on Smart Points, I came to terms with my go-to snacks jumping up in points. They did because quite honestly, they should have. Smart points is about getting you to make smart food choices. Giving you credit now where you deserve it for those good food choices and not giving you props for those unhealthy choices. If you’ve been good at finding ways to cheat the system, then yes you’re going to be in for a shock at some of the increase in points. Remember: this is about choosing the foods that are good for you and your body. Sure you can still enjoy the things that make us love the Weight Watchers program, but if your treat has doubled in points now you’ll really think about if that treat is worth it.

By week three, all was well with the world. I am pretty adjusted to the Smart Points change. I feel used to the increase in points and I’ve already found ways to trade out items that increased in points or I still enjoy them if I find them to be worth it. The good news is some of my staples like beer (Corona Light) stayed the same…winning! And my favorite pumpkin english muffins only went up by a point. Thank goodness!

As for the scale, I’ve only weighed in once right now and I’m down 0.8 pounds. I’m in maintenance mode, so my goal each week is to maintain my weight. I was so afraid the scale would just start going up with the increase in points for most foods, but it hasn’t and that’s a good thing. For most people in our group, the scale is going down and they’re having great success too!

The Beyond the Scale program also incorporates fitness with an activity dashboard and FitPoints. So get up and get moving so you can earn those FitPoints and meet your goal! But remember, it’s not about eating your fit points away.

To get started, you’ll take a quick self-assessment and a plan will be designed for you. Weight Watchers is moving in the right direction to really tailor needs to a plan that will be effective for all.

So now it’s your turn! It took our group three weeks to try out Smart Points and give it a chance. I am a creature of habit and I don’t like change. Most of us are this way and if this describes you then you’re probably going to have a hard time with this new change and that’s okay.

But remember, change is good. So give Smart Points a chance…you’ll be glad you did!

3 Months on WW

My first three months on Weight Watchers have been fantastic. I’m still shocked that twelve weeks have already gone by. If someone would’ve told me weeks ago that I would have the progress I have today, I wouldn’t even believe them. It’s just crazy.
This Saturday I weighed in for week twelve. I was down 3.6 pounds which brought my total loss to 24.6 pounds.
This week’s weigh in was a big deal because I’m in a “new number” that I haven’t been in for years. And I mean YEARS! It was definitely a small victory. I came across this the other day and it’s so true about the timeline. Here I am at twelve weeks and I’m going to still keep going.
  • I wanted to share some things that are still working for me and helping me be successful with Weight Watchers:
  • I love the WW app! No joke…the app makes this program seamless. Entering points, looking up food, and scanning food. I scan things like crazy.
  • I love having my FitBit linked to the WW app. I never use my activity points because I never get through all my weekly remaining points but I love seeing activity points rack up during the week.
  • I do enjoy a cheat meal on Saturday. I pick Saturday because it’s the day I weigh in. And I don’t feel guilty about it either. I do enter the meal into the WW app and then mentally I tell myself I have all week to work it off.
  • I do weigh myself mid-week to see how I’m doing. I like a mid-week check, so I don’t have any surprises at Saturday’s weigh in.
  • I eat all the fruit and veggies I can get my hands on. Zero points baby!
  • I’ve drastically cut back on my alcohol intake during the weekdays. And when I do have a beer or a glass of wine, it gets enter in the WW app and accounted for.
Those are my secrets for right now! Three months ago, I would’ve paid top dollar for a magic pill or secret diet program to help me lose 25 pounds. I would’ve never thought I could’ve done it on my own by tracking what I eat and making smart choices about what I choose to put in my body. Because honestly, that’s what it comes down to. Weight Watchers tells me how many points I can have. I choose what to do with them. It’s all up to me. I’m happy with my progress. I feel like I’m doing it the right way, as a lifestyle change, so that the weight I’m losing never comes back.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone! I hope y’all had a blast ringing in 2019! We had very quiet evening at home just hanging out and watching football. The night of course wasn’t complete without some champagne! Cheers!

As we start this new year, we’re all reflecting on resolutions and goals. Things we want to either achieve or improve on. Ways to live better or smarter. Well just like you, I’ve done the same.

For 2019, I’m setting goals for myself. Here are some of them:

To continue running. That’s a good thing, right? I don’t want to set a mileage number like xxxx, so I have a goal in mind and I hope to achieve it. This time last year I had a stress fracture and was in a boot. Hoping for a year of continued running with no injuries!

To finish the runDisney Goofy Challenge next weekend! 39.3 miles is a huge feat for me and something I’ve never accomplished before.

To get faster. I’ve been seeing great progress lately with speed workouts, so I know I can crush this goal in 2019.

To expand my horizons with races. I want to run in new places and try out new races. Being part of the #RockNBlog team this year is definitely going to help make that happen!

To keep focusing on a healthier me. I want to make good fit and food choices more often than not.

To spend more time with my favorite people. Life is just too short!

I feel good about the goals I’m setting for 2019! Some are going to be easy to reach and some will take more effort. But that’s what life is about.

There is always something to be thankful for. That seems to be the theme for this Thanksgiving. At least for me.

As the day is drawing to a close, the food has been eaten, the wine has been drank, and well let’s face it, our pants are all feeling a little tighter. But that’s okay because this day comes once a year and it’s one that I look forward to so much. Spending an entire day with family and doing nothing but enjoying each other’s company is exactly what I love doing. We don’t get to stop and do this often enough with our busy lives, so I’m thankful for this day.

Today we started the day with a Turkey Trot and then ended with a yummy meal and even better, some good ole’ apple pie. After all, life is just better with pie, right?

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. One that allows you to see that on this day and every other day there is always something to be thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving!

Top Secret Project

A few weeks ago, Weight Watchers reached out to me about a special project. It’s no secret that I love the Weight Watchers program. So, one non-disclsoure later, I was all in. Since I’m doing Weight Watchers, I was sure to scan each Gorton’s box at the grocery store when I was deciding which kind of fish to pick. The new Artisan Lemon & Cracked Peppercorn fillets were my favorite.

Two fillets was seven points which made me happy and the seasoning is what made this a winner. The breading was a little heavy, but the flavors made up for it and the fish itself was yummy.

I also tried Gorton’s gluten free Grilled Tilapia, Roasted Garlic & Butter fillets. One fillet was 2 points. These had a totally different flavor than the ones I first tried. The grilled flavor was good, the fish was moist, and you could really taste the garlic and butter flavoring. And at only two weight watchers points each, I was a happy girl!
